Roof Insurance Claims in Baton Rouge, LA

Big Easy Roofing documents and prices roof damage for homeowners across Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish. What we produce is a photographed, itemised scope you can hand straight to your insurer. What we will not do is tell you what your policy covers, and Louisiana law is the reason.

Baton Rouge roof insurance claims at a glance

This page is about paperwork rather than about cover, and that is deliberate. A roofing contractor in Louisiana may document, itemise and price damage. Telling you what your policy does is a job for somebody else, and the law says so.

What we produce

A documented scope

Every damaged element photographed with time and location stamps, named separately, described, and priced. Call Big Easy Roofing on (504) 800-8196 and we will come and document the roof.

Who permits a claim reroof

East Baton Rouge Parish

Since 1 August 2025 a full reroof is a permitted, inspected job whether or not a claim is paying for it, through Permits and Inspections, or through St. George, Baker, Zachary or Central if the address sits there. That is a real cost line that did not exist before.

What it costs to put right

$350 to $1,500

Our estimated band for a residential roof repair in Baton Rouge. A full asphalt replacement is estimated at $7,000 to $18,000. Both figures are carried unchanged from our repairs and replacement pages so there is one set of numbers.

What we will not do

Interpret your policy

La. R.S. 37:2159.1 limits what a roofing contractor may tell a homeowner about their own insurance cover. We keep to it. Coverage is a question for your insurer, and anyone answering it confidently on your doorstep is either guessing or should not be.

The other half of that rule

R.S. 22:1706(H)(11)

A licensed public adjuster is barred from acting as a contractor or providing roofing or repair services on a claim they have processed. Louisiana separates the two roles from both directions, which is worth knowing when somebody offers to do both.

The document you should not sign

An assignment

Anything that assigns your claim, your benefits or your right to proceeds to a contractor hands away the part of this you control. Get the price in writing with a date on it instead.

Every figure on this page is an estimate, not a quote, and is subject to Big Easy Roofing sign off. Cost and timescale depend on size, pitch, access, weather, materials and whatever is found once work starts, so call Big Easy Roofing on (504) 800-8196 and we will come out and give you an estimate for your own roof.

The most useful thing a roofing page can tell a Baton Rouge homeowner about an insurance claim is which questions to ask whom. There are two separate jobs in a roof claim and Louisiana keeps them apart on purpose. One is establishing what is damaged and what it costs to put right, which is a roofing question. The other is establishing what the policy responds to, which is an insurance question. A contractor answering the second one is doing something the state has legislated against.

That separation is the reason this page will not tell you whether your damage is covered. It is not that we know less. It is that a roofer who tells you confidently that your damage is covered has told you something they are not in a position to know and not permitted to say, and the moment you rely on it, you are the one carrying the risk. What we can do is make the roofing side of it so well documented that nobody has to take anybody's word for anything.

Who does what in a roof claim and who is not allowed to

Four parties turn up in a roof insurance claim and they have different jobs, different licences and different obligations. Confusing them is how homeowners end up relying on advice from somebody who was never in a position to give it.

WhoWhat they doLicensed byWhat they may not do
You, the policyholderOwn the policy and the decisionNot applicableNothing. It is your claim, and it stays yours unless you sign it away

The two rows at the bottom are the important pair. Louisiana bars a public adjuster from doing the roofing on a claim they handled, and bars a roofing contractor from advising on cover. Anyone offering to be both is offering something the law separates, whatever they call it. You can check a contractor with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors and an adjuster on the Department of Insurance producer and adjuster search. Call (504) 800-8196 if you want the roofing side of it documented properly.

What a documented roof scope actually contains

A scope worth having can be read by you, by your insurer, by another roofer or by anybody else you choose to show it to. That is a higher bar than a quote, and it is entirely within what a contractor is allowed to produce.

Photographs taken before anything moves

Time and location stamped

Every damaged element photographed where it is, from the ground and from the roof, before any tarping, clearing or repair. Once something has been moved or made safe, that record cannot be recreated.

Each item named separately

Not one storm total

Covering, flashing, valley, ridge, gutter, vent, decking, each named, each described, each with a price against it and a photograph of the thing being claimed. A single figure with nothing behind it is not comparable to anything.

Where repair stops and replacement starts

Said plainly

A scope should state the point at which the job stops being a repair, and why. Damage across several slopes on an older covering is a different proposition from damage in one place, and the reasoning belongs in writing rather than in a conversation.

And the permit, which is new

Since 1 August 2025

A full reroof in East Baton Rouge now needs its own permit and inspection under La. R.S. 37:3737(I), with the parish photograph set filed through MyGovernmentOnline. That is a real cost and a real step in the programme, and it belongs on the scope rather than appearing later.

Why we photograph before we tarp

After a storm the instinct is to get the roof covered, and that instinct is correct. The only thing that has to happen first is the photographs, because a tarp hides exactly the evidence somebody will later want to see.

It takes minutes. Our emergency work is documented in that order for that reason: photograph, then make safe, then repair. The pack is yours whether or not you go on to use us for the work.

Two different kinds of damage need two different records

Wind and hail break a roof differently and are documented differently. Wind breaks the seal strip that bonds each shingle course to the one below, so the course lies back down looking untouched. Hail fractures the mat and strips granules in defined patches, and is counted in a marked test square rather than judged by eye.

A roof can carry both. Where it does, each is recorded separately rather than rolled into one total, because they are different defects with different repairs. The storm damage and hail pages set out each method in full.

Before you sign anything a roofer puts in front of you

Storm work brings people to the door, and some of them were not in Baton Rouge the week before. Four checks cost nothing and take a few minutes, and they are the difference between a contractor you can hold to something and one you cannot find afterwards.

Check the licence, on the board rather than on the van

Louisiana licenses contractors through the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors, and the board is where a licence is verified rather than on a business card or a truck door. Ask for the name the licence is held in, which is not always the name on the paperwork you are being handed.

If the answer is vague, that is the answer. A licensed contractor has no difficulty telling you exactly what they are licensed as.

Never sign an assignment of your claim or benefits

This is the single most consequential piece of paper in a roof claim. A document that assigns your claim, your benefits or your right to proceeds hands the contractor the part of the process you would otherwise control, and it is often presented as a formality so that work can start quickly.

You do not need to sign anything like it to get a roof documented or repaired. A dated written price for described work is what a straightforward job runs on. If a signature is being pressed on the doorstep, that pressure is itself the information.

Be wary of an offer to handle your deductible

An offer to absorb, waive or take care of your deductible is a reason to stop rather than a discount, and it tends to arrive alongside an assurance about what is covered, which is the thing a contractor is not permitted to give you in the first place.

The same goes for a price that moves depending on what the claim pays rather than on what the work is. Ask what the work costs. That question has one answer and it does not depend on your policy.

Big Easy Roofing Process

Three steps, and none of them involves us telling you anything about your policy, because that is not ours to tell.

02

Call (504) 800-8196
Will you handle my insurance claim

No, and be wary of a roofer who says they will. La. R.S. 37:2159.1 limits what a roofing contractor may tell a homeowner about their own cover. What we do is photograph the damage, itemise it, price it and hand you the pack, which is the material a roofer is in a position to produce. The claim itself stays yours.

What is a public adjuster and do I need one

A public adjuster is a separate profession licensed by the Louisiana Department of Insurance to represent a policyholder on a claim. Whether you need one is your decision and not a roofing question. What is worth knowing is that R.S. 22:1706(H)(11) bars a public adjuster from acting as a contractor or doing roofing work on a claim they have processed.

Why will you not tell me if my damage is covered

Because Louisiana law restricts what a roofing contractor may tell a homeowner about their own insurance cover, and because we would not actually know. Cover turns on the wording of your policy, which we have not read and are not qualified to construe. Your insurer can answer it and we can make sure the roofing side is documented properly.

What should a roof scope for a claim contain

Each damaged element named separately, described, priced, and photographed, with the photographs taken before anything was moved. It should also say plainly where repair stops and replacement starts, and include the permit where a reroof is involved. A single line and a single number is not something anyone can check.

Should I sign an assignment of benefits

Not without advice you trust, and you do not need to sign one to have a roof documented or repaired. A document assigning your claim, your benefits or your right to proceeds hands away the part of the process you control. A dated written price for described work is what a straightforward job runs on.

A roofer offered to cover my deductible, is that normal

It is a reason to stop rather than a discount, and it usually arrives with an assurance about what is covered, which is the thing a contractor is not permitted to give you. Ask instead what the work costs. That question has one answer and it does not change depending on your policy.

What does the work itself cost

Our estimated band for a residential roof repair in Baton Rouge is $350 to $1,500, and for a full asphalt replacement $7,000 to $18,000. Those are the same figures as on our repairs and replacement pages, and they are estimates rather than quotes. The permit is a separate cost and it is on the scope.

Does a claim funded reroof still need a permit

Yes. Act 239 of 2025 introduced the requirement, now carried at La. R.S. 37:3737(I), which requires a permit and an inspection on roof construction and reroofing regardless of who is paying for it. East Baton Rouge verifies it from a set of 16 geotagged photographs filed through MyGovernmentOnline, so the photography has to start before the tear off does.

Who issues the permit if I am not in Baton Rouge proper

The address decides it. Permitting inside the City of St. George limits transferred to St. George for applications filed on or after 16 October 2024, and Baker, Zachary and Central are separate municipalities within the parish. It is the first thing we check rather than an afterthought.

How quickly can you document the roof

We aim to get a single house looked at within the week. After a widespread storm the whole region is queuing at once, so we would rather give you a position in the queue than promise a day we cannot hold. An active leak is a different call and is handled as an emergency.

Get the damage documented and itemised before anything is moved or covered

We photograph every damaged element with time and location stamps, name and price each one separately, and hand you the pack to use however you need. What your insurer makes of it is between you and them. If you would rather start in writing, tell us what the job involves and we will come back with an estimate.
