Hail Damage Roof Repair in LaPlace, LA
Big Easy Roofing assesses and repairs hail damage across LaPlace and the east bank of St. John the Baptist Parish. Hail can shorten the life of a roof without a single leak, and it tends to bring roofers to the door. The parish permit form shows what to ask any of them for before you sign.
LaPlace hail damage at a glance
Hail damage on a LaPlace roof is often invisible from the street and rarely leaks straight away. It bruises shingles and knocks granules loose, which shortens the life of the covering. So the assessment happens on the roof, and before anyone signs anything, the parish permit form shows what to ask a roofer for.
Hail rarely announces itself
Soft metals are the easy tell
Dents in roof vents, flashing and gutters are easier to see than bruised shingles. They do not prove the covering is damaged, but they show the roof was hit and is worth a proper look.
The parish form asks for a licence number
The St. John the Baptist Parish Residential Permit Application has a contractor section with a licence number field, and a note on the form says current registration or licence, when applicable, is required at the time of submittal.
All owners must sign
The same form says all owners must be listed and must sign. Where the applicant is not the owner, it asks whether there is a letter of authorization or a signed contract. Read what a crew hands you before you sign it.
What we will not tell you
Under R.S. 37:2159.1 a Louisiana roofing contractor may not interpret your insurance cover. We will not tell you whether hail damage is covered, or offer to handle a claim. We record what we found.
The permit still applies
Louisiana requires any municipality or parish that issues construction permits to permit and inspect roof construction and reroofing. St. John the Baptist Parish issues permits, so a hail replacement goes through the Permit Division.

Signs of hail, and what each one actually tells you
No single sign proves hail damage on its own, and some look the same as ordinary ageing. What matters is the pattern across the roof and the soft metals. This table sets out what is found, what it can mean, and what usually follows.
| What is found | What it can mean | Usual next step | Estimated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dents in vents, flashing or gutters | The roof was hit, covering not yet checked | Assess the shingles on the roof | Assessment |
| Soft or bruised spots in shingles | Damage to the mat under the surface | Photograph and map the pattern | Repair or replacement |
| Granules collected in gutters | Hail loss, or ordinary ageing | Compare against the rest of the roof | Depends on the pattern |
| Damage confined to one area | Localised strike or older wear | Repair the affected area | $350 to $1,500 |
| Damage spread across several slopes | The covering has lost service life widely | Usually replace | $7,000 to $18,000 |
Every figure is an estimate and none of it is a quote. Granules in a gutter are normal on an ageing roof too, which is why the assessment looks at the pattern rather than one sign.
What the parish permit form asks of a hail crew, and of you
Hail tends to bring roofers to the door. The St. John the Baptist Parish Residential Permit Application asks for the contractor's licence number, requires every owner to be listed and sign, and doubles fees for permits applied for after the fact. Those three lines are a good checklist.
The contractor section
The parish residential permit application has a contractor block asking for the business, the name and a licence number, and a note on the form says current registration or licence, when applicable, is required at the time of submittal. A copy of the contract and the contractor's licence is listed as needed, if applicable.
Who signs the application
The form says all owners must be listed and must sign. If the applicant is not the owner, it asks whether there is a letter of authorization or a signed contract. A paper a crew asks you to sign at the door may be exactly that, so read it first.
Starting before the permit costs more
The same form states that all fees will be doubled for after-the-fact permits and when information provided on an application is falsified. Ask the Permit Division before any work starts, not after.
The value threshold applies to hail work too
From 1 January 2026 the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification is required to quote, estimate or perform work on a residential roofing system valued at seven thousand five hundred dollars or more. A full hail replacement can easily reach it.
Three questions for anyone who knocks after a storm
First, what licence number will go on the parish permit application, and does it carry the residential roofing classification for work of this value. Check it with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors rather than accepting it at the door.
Second, what exactly is this paper you want me to sign. Third, will the permit be issued before any work starts.
What we will not tell you about hail and insurance
We will not tell you whether hail damage is covered or how a claim will land, and we will not offer to handle a claim. R.S. 37:2159.1 bars a Louisiana roofing contractor from interpreting cover.
What we provide is a record: dated photographs and a written finding. If the damage goes beyond the roof, our storm damage roof repair page explains the parish elevation rule that can apply in Zones AE and VE.
What hail does to a roof in LaPlace
LaPlace is hot and humid for most of the year, which is hard on an asphalt covering that has already been bruised. Hail damage does not stay the same size. Once the protective surface is broken, the damaged area ages faster than the rest of the roof around it.
A bruise ages faster than the roof around it
Granules protect the asphalt from sunlight. Where hail knocks them loose, the exposed patch dries and cracks sooner, so a roof with a few years left can lose some of them in the damaged area.
That is why hail is treated as a question of remaining service life rather than as a leak repair, and why "it is not leaking" is not the same as "it is fine".
Looking from the ground is not an assessment
Bruised shingles look like undamaged shingles from the street. The assessment is done on the roof, slope by slope, with the soft metals checked as a guide to where the strikes landed.
If you want the whole roof put on record rather than only the hail question answered, a roof inspection does that.
A confined area is usually a repair
Where the damage is limited to one area and the rest of the covering is sound, a roof repair is usually the cheaper and correct answer.
Where it is spread across several slopes, repeat repairs rarely make sense and a replacement, permitted through the parish, is the honest recommendation.
Big Easy Roofing Process
Four steps. The first one is yours, because it happens before anyone is on the roof.
01 Check who is on your roof, and what you are signing
Ask for the Louisiana contractors licence number that will go on the parish application, check it with the licensing board, and read any paper before you sign it.
02 Assess on the roof, slope by slope
Soft metals, shingle bruising and granule loss, photographed and dated as the pattern is mapped.
03 Write the finding
No damage worth acting on, a repair, or a replacement, with the photographs behind it and a value on any work.
04 For a replacement, permit the reroof first
Filed with St. John the Baptist Parish through MyGovernmentOnline or at the counter, with the work starting once the permit is issued. For a repair, the Permit Division answers whether one is needed.

Call (504) 800-8196How do I know if my roof has hail damage
Often you cannot tell from the ground. Dents in vents, flashing and gutters show the roof was hit. Bruised shingles and granule loss are found on the roof itself, and the pattern across the slopes is what separates hail damage from ordinary ageing.
Does hail damage always cause a leak
No. Hail often cracks the mat under a shingle without breaking the surface, so the roof may not leak for a long time. The damaged area still ages faster than the rest, which shortens the life of the covering.
Are granules in my gutters a sign of hail
They can be, but granule loss is also normal on an ageing roof. On its own it proves nothing. It is read alongside dents in soft metals and bruising on the shingles.
What does the parish permit form ask of my roofer
The St. John the Baptist Parish Residential Permit Application asks for the contractor's business, name and licence number, and a note on the form says current registration or licence, when applicable, is required at the time of submittal. Check the licence with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors.
