Soffit Repair in Harahan, LA
Big Easy Roofing repairs soffit across Harahan and east bank Jefferson Parish. A failed soffit is asking one of two very different questions. Either the panel has failed and the run needs a section, or the timber behind it has failed and the run needs carpentry. The eave tells you which, and telling the two apart is the reason we open a run before pricing it.
Harahan soffit repair at a glance
A section repair is priced by the affected run rather than by the house, estimated at $8 to $22 a linear foot. That is above the rate for a new run because matching into existing panel is slower, and the price depends on which of two different failures the run is showing.
Estimated cost per foot
For cutting out and replacing a failed section and matching it into the run either side. Short runs cost more per foot than long ones because the set up is the same either way. A whole new eave is quoted as an installation.
Does it need a permit
Replacing soffit panel is not the re roofing that the 2025 rule makes permitted and inspected. Where the work turns structural behind the panel the position changes, and we put it to the correct office rather than deciding it ourselves.
The first question at the eave
Whether the panel has failed by itself or whether the timber it was fastened to has failed under it. The two look similar from the ground and cost very different amounts to fix, so it is the first thing to settle.
Typical section repair
A single elevation or one damaged run, which is what a Harahan call usually turns out to be. Whole home replacement is a different job with a different rate.
Typical timeline, panel only
Where the panel has failed and the timber behind it is sound, one day is normal for a section, including matching in and closing the ends.
Typical timeline, timber behind
Where a rotted nailer, fascia or rafter tail is behind the failed panel, the fix runs to two or three days because the carpentry has to be sound before new panel can go up.
Every figure on this page is an estimate, not a quote, and is subject to Big Easy Roofing sign off. Cost and timescale depend on size, pitch, access, weather, materials and whatever is found once work starts, so call Big Easy Roofing on (504) 800-8196 and we will come out and give you an estimate for your own roof.
Soffit closes the underside of the eave and, where it is vented, feeds the attic. When a section fails, both of those stop working at that point, and only the first one is visible from the ground. That is why a soffit repair is worth doing properly rather than quickly: the half you cannot see is the half that costs money later.
The more useful split is between two different failures with the same appearance. Almost every soffit call at this eave is either a panel that has failed on its own, or panel that is telling you the timber behind it has failed. The first is a soffit job. The second is carpentry. Pricing them as the same repair is why the same run comes back for a second visit six months later, and telling them apart at the eave is why we open a section before quoting it.
Panel failure or timber behind it
Four checks at the eave usually settle which of the two you are looking at, and each points at a different fix and a different price. The last two of them cannot be done from the ground, which is why an honest figure comes after the run is opened rather than before.
| What we look at | Points to the panel | Points to the timber behind | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does the panel move localised, or has the whole run moved | A localised soft spot, a hole, a crack, a corroded fastener, or a corner blown loose in a wind event, with the surrounding panel firm | The whole run moves as a unit, or has dropped into a sag or a step away from the wall because the nailer or the fascia has failed under the fixings | Because a hole is a panel that has given up in one place and a sag is a run whose support has moved, and the two can look identical from the ground |
| Is there dark staining or a soft edge on the fascia | No, the fascia paint is intact and the edge is firm | Yes, either running vertically or across a length of the board | Because a rotten fascia is the timber behind the panel on any eave with a nailer mounted to it, so this is the fascia page rather than the soffit page |
| Is there rot visible from inside the attic | No, the attic side of the eave is dry and the rafter tails are firm | Yes, damp or spongy timber at the tail of a rafter or on the top of the fascia | Because rot visible from inside is structural and it is fixed as carpentry rather than as panel work |
| Is there daylight through the run | A small localised gap that closes when the section is replaced | A long line of daylight, or several gaps along the same run | Because a long line of daylight is a run that has been open to weather and wildlife for a while, which usually means the timber behind it has taken damage too |
The highlighted row is the check that separates the two families most reliably, and it is the one worth doing before any quote goes on paper. Where the timber behind is the failure, the fascia board repair page is the sibling that owns that work. Call (504) 800-8196 and we will open a section, tell you which of the two your eave is, and price accordingly.
The permit position, matching, and the part easiest to leave out
Panel work on an eave is not a reroof, so it sits outside the state rule that makes re roofing permitted and inspected. What is worth arguing about before the work are whether the new panel will match, whether the eave will still be ventilating afterwards, and whether the cause of the failure has actually been dealt with.
Who issues the permit
For an address inside the Harahan city limits, the City of Harahan Regulatory Department on (504) 737-6765. For an address in the unincorporated part of Jefferson Parish, the parish permits office. The 70123 ZIP is shared with unincorporated Elmwood and River Ridge, so the boundary gets settled at the address rather than at the ZIP.
The intake after the repair
A repaired run has to go back vented if it was vented, and with the insect screen intact. Closing it with solid panel or filling gaps with foam or sealant leaves a tidy eave that no longer feeds the attic. The soffit installation page carries the panel options and the roof ventilation page carries the intake calculation.
Matching into existing panel
Colour fades with UV exposure and profiles get discontinued, so an honest quote says up front whether the match will be close or obvious. Where it would be obvious, replacing a whole run so the elevation reads consistently is often the better answer and we will offer it.
The part easiest to leave out
A run that failed because water was arriving from above, or because the nailer had softened, will do the same thing to new panel. So the cause gets priced alongside the panel rather than left for a return visit.
How a repair can cost you the ventilation
This is the failure worth naming, because it looks like success. A failed run gets closed with whatever solid panel was on the van, or a gap gets filled with foam or sealant, or a nest is simply covered over. The eave now looks better than it did and it has stopped feeding the roof space.
Nothing about that is visible from the ground, and the effect turns up later as a hotter attic and a shorter covering life. So the question to ask about any soffit repair quote is what is going back in: vented or solid, and screened or not. What each panel actually delivers is on the soffit installation page, and how much the attic needs is on the roof ventilation page.
What we expect to find behind a failed run
Four things to expect, and often more than one. Wet or crumbling fascia behind the panel. Rotted rafter tails where water has been sitting. Blocked intake, either from a nest or from insulation pushed into the eave. And daylight, which means the eave has been open to weather and wildlife for a while.
None of those is visible before the panel comes down, which is why a soffit quote given from the ground is a starting figure rather than a price. Anything found is shown and priced before it is done rather than added afterwards.
What an eave here usually has behind it
Two things about this climate put the eave first when a roof shows its age. Water arrives at it in volume and often over the edge of the gutter, and the humidity means the timber behind the panel rarely dries between one storm and the next.
Water arrives at the eave in volume
NOAA Atlas 14 records a 100 year 60 minute rainfall rate of 5.39 inches per hour for the Harahan coordinates, which is a measure of how hard the rain can arrive rather than a sizing basis. A gutter that cannot handle a burst like that overflows somewhere, and where it goes over the back edge it puts water onto the fascia and into the soffit behind it. The gutter pages cover capacity.
The timber behind the panel stays damp
Sustained humidity means the eave here spends most of the year damp rather than drying between storms. Timber components and any panel relying on a paint film take the worst of that, which is why older plywood and hardboard soffit tend to fail generally rather than in one spot, and why the nailer behind a vinyl or aluminium panel is usually the part that gives up first.
Wildlife takes any opening
Any gap in a soffit is an entrance, and birds, wasps and squirrels find them quickly. A nest is not just a nuisance, it stops that stretch of eave feeding the attic at all. Clearing it and then closing and screening the eave properly is part of the repair rather than an extra.
Big Easy Roofing Process
Four steps, and the second one is the one that decides whether this is a panel job or a carpentry job, which is what decides whether the quote is at $8 a foot or well above it.
Look at the eave and the run either side
The extent of the failure, and whether there is sound panel to match into. That is what decides a section repair against a new run, and it is a judgement made at the eave rather than from a photograph.
Open a section and settle panel or timber
The four checks in the compare table above run at the eave, and the panel comes down so the nailer, the fascia and the rafter tail can be seen. Panel only is one price, timber behind is another, and both are shown before either is quoted.
Show what is behind before fixing anything
Rot, nests, blocked intake and daylight are what typically appear once a run is open. Anything found is shown and priced before it is done rather than added to the invoice after.
Put it back vented, screened and closed
A run that was vented goes back vented with the screen intact, the ends properly closed, and the cause above it dealt with so the same section does not come back. Call (504) 800-8196 to book the diagnosis.
