Storm Damage Roof Repair in Hammond, LA
Big Easy Roofing repairs storm damaged roofs across Hammond and Tangipahoa Parish. A storm inland can do two quite different things to a property, and only one of them is a roofing job. We scope what the wind did, document it, and are straight with you about anything that is not ours to fix.
Hammond storm damage at a glance
Storm damage on an inland property splits into two things that get confused with each other. What the wind did to the roof, which is a roofing job, and water that arrived from somewhere other than the roof, which is not. Separating them early saves a great deal of wasted time.
What we scope
Lifted or missing covering, broken seal strips, damaged flashings and ridge, and impact from debris. That is roofing work, it gets documented and scoped in writing, and the price follows the measurement rather than the weather report.
What is not a roofing question
Water entering at ground level, or rising, is not something a roof repair addresses and we will say so rather than scoping around it. Being clear about that on day one is more use than a quote for the wrong problem.
The permit form records the flood zone
The City of Hammond permit application captures the flood zone and separates the zones that require an elevation certificate, A, AE, AO and AH, from those that do not, C and X. The zone is recorded against the property when the permit is issued.
A roof repair is not a flood improvement
Repairing storm damage to a covering does not change a property's flood position and is not intended to. Questions about elevation, floodplain requirements or flood cover are for the City, your insurer or a qualified professional, not for a roofer.
The paperwork route is the ordinary one
Storm damage does not create its own permit route. The City of Hammond Building Department covers addresses inside the city limits and the Parish Permit Office covers the unincorporated area.
What we will not do
Louisiana law does not permit a roofing contractor to interpret policy coverage or duties, or to adjust a claim. We document observed conditions and provide a good faith itemised repair estimate, and coverage questions go to your insurer or agent.
Every figure on this page is an estimate, not a quote, and is subject to Big Easy Roofing sign off. Cost and timescale depend on size, pitch, access, weather, materials and whatever is found once work starts, so call Big Easy Roofing on (504) 800-8196 and we will come out and give you an estimate for your own roof.
Every figure here is an estimate, not a quote, and is subject to Big Easy Roofing sign off. What storm damage costs to put right depends on how much of the covering moved and what is underneath it, so call (504) 800-8196 for a written price.
What storm damage actually looks like on a roof
Storm damage is rarely as obvious as a hole. Most of it is a seal that has broken, a fastener that has pulled, or a detail that has moved slightly, and those are the ones that leak months later. The table sets out four categories and what each really involves.
| What happened | Estimated repair | How it presents | What is easy to miss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Covering lifted or lost | $500 to $2,500 | Visible gaps, shingles on the ground, exposed underlayment | The seal strip is usually broken well beyond the shingles that actually moved |
| Impact from debris | $700 to $3,500 | Punctures, cracked or split covering, damaged flashings | The deck underneath can be damaged where the covering looks only bruised |
| Flashings and ridge moved | $700 to $2,000 | Lifted ridge caps, displaced flashing at a wall or chimney | It often does not leak until the next sustained rain from the right direction |
| Widespread covering failure | $8,000 to $20,000 | Damage across several slopes rather than one area | This is a replacement conversation, and repairing it slope by slope rarely pays |
Estimates only, and none of it is a quote. The category matters less than the extent, and the extent is established by looking rather than by the size of the storm.
The paperwork after a storm is the paperwork before one
Storm damage does not open a separate permit route in Hammond. The same two offices apply, on the same published scales, and the same rule about starting work before the permit is signed. What a storm adds is the flood zone question, and the form already asks it.
The reroof requirement is unchanged
Louisiana requires permitting and inspection of roof construction and reroofing for projects beginning on or after 1 August 2025, at La. R.S. 37:3737(I). A storm does not change that, and a repair large enough to be a reroof is treated as one.
Which office covers the address
Inside the city limits the Building Department at 219 E Robert St on (985) 277-5655. Outside them the Parish Permit Office on (985) 542-2117. The boundary decides it, not the postmark.
The flood zone gets recorded
The City permit application separates flood zones requiring an elevation certificate, A, AE, AO and AH, from those that do not, C and X. It is captured as part of the application rather than raised afterwards.
Starting before the permit issues costs more
The City application states that failing to get the permit before work begins will result in a stop work order and a doubling of the appropriate permit's fees, and that the City may require removal of work begun and impose monetary fines.
Why we separate wind damage from everything else on day one
A storm that damages a roof often does other things to a property at the same time, and a roofing contractor is only competent to deal with one of them. Scoping the roof and saying plainly what falls outside it is more useful than a document that quietly covers everything.
It also keeps the record clean. Photographs and a scope that address the roof are worth more than a general assessment of storm damage from someone whose trade is roofing.
What we can give you, and what we cannot
We can document observed conditions with dated photographs and provide a good faith itemised repair estimate for the roofing work. That is factual and it is genuinely useful whatever happens next.
We do not interpret policy coverage or duties, and we do not adjust claims. Louisiana law does not permit a roofing contractor to do that, so those questions go to your insurer or agent, or to an appropriately licensed claims professional.
What gets missed in the week after a storm
The damage that causes trouble later is rarely the damage anyone photographed on the day, because the failures that matter most are the ones that do not leak immediately. Three things are routinely under-assessed after a storm, and all three are cheap to establish properly while someone is already up on the roof looking.
Seal strips broken beyond the visible gap
Wind that lifts a few shingles breaks the adhesive seal on a band well beyond the ones that actually came off. Those shingles look fine and are no longer holding, so they move in the next comparable wind.
Checking the seal either side of the obvious damage is what decides whether this is a small repair or a slope, and it is the single most useful thing to establish early.
Deck damage under intact covering
Debris can bruise or split the deck while the covering above it looks only marked. It does not leak immediately, which is exactly why it gets left out of the scope.
Where impact is found, what is underneath is checked rather than assumed from the surface, because a repair laid over damaged decking is a repair that fails.
Flashings that moved slightly
A ridge cap or a wall flashing that shifted a fraction still looks like a roof. It will not leak in ordinary rain and will leak in sustained rain driven from the right direction, which can be months later.
That delay is why storm damage sometimes appears to be a new problem. It usually is not, which is another reason the condition gets recorded and dated at the time.
Big Easy Roofing Process
Four steps. The first separates what is a roofing problem from what is not, because scoping the wrong thing wastes more time than any other mistake after a storm.
01 Establish what is actually roof damage
Wind and impact damage to the covering, flashings and deck, separated from anything that is not a roofing question. Said plainly either way.
02 Document the condition and date it
General views before anything moves, then the damage in close up, then the areas that are undamaged, so the whole roof is recorded on one date.
03 Establish the office and the permit position
City of Hammond or Tangipahoa Parish, on the published scale, with the flood zone captured on the application as the form requires.
04 Scope, price and repair
A written scope before work starts, and the permit and inspection paperwork handed over with the completed job.
